End of August: With Three K- Movies

Image
  1. <달짝지근해: 7510> 'Bittersweet'  A romantic comedy. Fun to watch if the laugh code suits you; but if not, may be a little uncomfortable to watch. Nevertheless, a lovely, cheerful film. And the return of the romance queen actress Kim Hee-sun! Not to mention the ever handsome Cha In-pyo:) 2. <보호자> 'A Man of Reason'  Personally, the best among the three. Directed by top actor Jung Woo-sung. Felt the movie was underrated; although the plot is a little old-fashioned, delicate artistic beauty could be seen on screen. Flawless. Best acting by director Jung Woo-sung himself. 3. <타겟> 'Target'  Extreme and frightening thriller. All starts when a woman buys a second-hand washing machine from a murderer. Well portrays the danger of second-hand transaction. Violence may seem exaggerated at some points, but the scary thing is that everything can become true.  As of these three films, August ends.. Looking forward to Chuseok (a Korean holiday in September); ...

<콘크리트 유토피아> 'Concrete Utopia' Movie Review

Image
This was the best they could do. It was obvious that the film makers did their best. The plot, the characters, the ending, and most of all the amazing acting of each actors, all seemed like the best choice. There was definitely no room for improvement.  Because of an earthquake, the world turns into ruins instantly. But only Hwang Gung Apartment survives the earthquake. Then it becomes a matter of endless choices in order for the residents to survive this crisis.  Lee Byung-hun... His acting absolutely deserved a good standing ovation. He absolutely nailed it. His acting was like, WOW. Everything about him was totally unbelievable and incredible. His character seemed completely abnormal and frightening as he should be.. And of course, Park Bo-young, Park Seo-jun, and Kim Sun-young were equally awesome as well.  The movie was absolutely frightening. It depicted the ugly side of reality directly. Thanks to this, the movie was concretely a dystopia. With little ...

<비공식작전> 'Ransomed' Movie Review

Image
Comparing Ransomed to Escape from Mogadishu and The Point Men seems inevitable, as the three are considered as something like a "diplomatic rescue trilogy". They have a common theme; rescuing endangered citizens in a foreign country. And a team of two men always sets out on the mission. Escape from Mogadishu was successful despite COVID, whereas  The Point Men (which I have reviewed) didn't turn out so well. Since both movies weren't for me I was hesitant to watch  Ransomed . After much thought, I eventually went to the movies. It wasn't necessarily lovable, yet definitely better than its counterparts.  Min-jun, a Korean diplomat, inevitably goes to Lebanon to rescue a fellow diplomat who went missing twenty months ago. Things doesn't go as he planned, but then encounters a mysterious Korean taxi driver there by chance and they start working together.  The movie differentiated itself from other K-movies by actively making use of foreign actors such as Ma...

<더 문> 'The Moon' Movie Review

Image
The release of Korea's first outer space blockbuster caught people's attention. The movie also hyped up K-pop idol group EXO's fans, since the lead role is Doh Kyung-soo (aka D.O.) of EXO. Along with a lot of renowned actors, The Moon launched its way forward.  The story is centered on an astronaut Seon-woo, a former UDT. He joins the mission to go to the moon, but unexpected natural accidents lead to difficulties, leaving him in danger of being stranded in outer space.  Overall, the movie was amazing and thrilling. The personal stories of the characters were well-organized, making it easy to emphasize with them. The CG skills were absolutely astonishing, leaving a great impression. And although Doh Kyung-soo's acting seemed a little awkward in the beginning, he clearly proves his worth as time goes on. It was also inspiring to watch the skilled acting of Seol Kyung-gu, Kim Hee-ae, and Lee Sung-min.  However, some parts were a little bit disapp...
