< 1947 보스톤> 'Road To Boston' Movie Review [Chuseok Film 3]
The 1936 Berlin Marathon remains as a heartbreaking history to Koreans. During this time, Korea was under Japanese rule. Therefore, Korean marathon runners had to participate wearing a uniform with the Japanese flag engraved. In this marathon, Son Ki-chung finished first, and Nam Seung-ryeong finished third. Two Korean runners won the gold and bronze medal but sadly, the Japanese national anthem rang across the stadium. In the award ceremony, Son Ki-chung covered up the Japanese flag on his uniform with laurel leaves he received, and Korean newspaper company deliberately erased the flag to cover up the heartbreaking reality. Due to this incident, Son Ki-chung was forced to give up his life as a marathon runner, forever remaining as a Japanese runner who won a gold medal for Japan.
Years later, in 1947, Son Ki-chung encounters a talented young runner Suh Yun-bok, winner of the marathon held in his name. Son had been living a meaningless life, but meeting Suh lights up passion in his heart once again. Suh refuses to become a professional runner at first, since his priority is earning a living, but eventually gives in to follow his dream. They try hard to participate in the 1947 Boston Marathon as a free country for the first time after Korea's independence in 1945. However, they face many obstacles since Korea is merely a small and powerless country. Luckily, they finally succeed in participating as a free country, and under the coaching of Son and encouragement from fellow participant and now quite aged Nam Seung-ryeong, Suh wins the gold medal, surprising the world.
The victory of Suh Yun-bok was extremely meaningful in that it brought hope to fellow Koreans. Anyone will be deeply moved and inspired watching Road To Boston. In my previous post, I mentioned that Cobweb was personally the best among the three Chuseok movies. That was because Cobweb was to my taste. But the movie that I am willing to watch one more time, and the movie that I strongly recommend is Road To Boston. It's certainly impossible to not like the heartwarming sensation felt strongly throughout the entire movie:) It was great to feel my heart fire up with pride and gratitude.
Review: Reminds proudly of how Korea came to be.
