<괜찮아 괜찮아 괜찮아!> 'It's Okay!' Movie Review

Finally, the film I was waiting for so long! The film gained attention as it was awarded in Berlin International Film Festival. Personally I couldn't wait to see actress Lee Re, famed child actor now all grown up, on screen. Ever since she was a tiny young girl, her genuine acting moved the audience. Watching her grow on screen had always been a pleasure, so throughout the movie I was constantly overwhelmed by her advancement:) It's Okay is the first film she leads solely, making it a meaningful turning point to her acting life.

At first glance, the synopsis may seem ordinary. It's about high school girl In-Young surviving in her own cheerful way after her mother suddenly passes away. But what's special about this movie is the chemistry between the characters. Their chemistry is especially crucial because In-Young's bright spirit can only be kept alive through her close relationships. In-Young is absolutely powerless to protect what once was hers. She can't pay tuition for school, works part time job to earn a living, and gets kicked out of her house. Despite extreme conditions however, In-Young survives wonderfully. Her approach is simple; just smile as if you are truly happy. In-Young will always have emptiness for her loss. But since she gives her all, others start to acknowledge and admire her honest radiant struggle. Her consistent laughter may seem feigned, but really, what else?

With amazing soundtracks, including one sung by Lee Re herself, the film gives off a sunny vibe. The actors' heartfelt presentation along with cinematic visual beauty completes a lovely masterpiece.

P.S. If you are curious of Lee Re's childhood movies, I would recommend How To Steal A Dog(2014), Hope(2013), and Peninsula(2020).

Review: Smile your way through. It's as simple as that.
